Tea Service

attributed to anonymous, after 1794

Depicted on this service are heroes and heroic feats from Dutch history. The scenes derive from a 1794 pro-Dutch Patriots (a political faction) print. Not only historical heroes, but also contemporary Patriots were presented as worthy role models. A cup of tea served in the home of someone supporting the Patriots thus acquired a political overtone.

Description
Servies (theeservies) van porselein, beschilderd op het glazuur in sepia en goud. Het servies bestaat uit een theepot, melkkan, suikerpot met schotel en tien koppen en schotels. Allen versierd met historische voorvallen en portretten van personen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis naar een patriotsgezinde gravure van J.G. Visser: "Tempel voor Nederland" uit 1794 (Muller nr. 5249).
